Challengers are so cute.

"However, we hope House will make another run for public office in a few years."

Ah, Janneke, you cutie. You're only 23 and you're running for office! Thanks to the Trib, you now know that you doesn't have enough "life experience" to be a City Councilgirl. You know, my nephew the other day - he, he was wearing a stethescope 'round is neck and he said that he'd make Uncle Shawn's cough go away! Oh, it was so fuhreakin cute. I responded, "I'm sure you can, m' boy. You'll make a great doctor - when you add a few feet!"

Oh, did I mention that Carlton Christensen is a business analyst? I know, I know, I, too was like what the freakin heck is that? You must have to have a PhD from Harvard or something to do something like that. That other lady - maybe she could bring cookies to the Council meetings!

I find it interesting that the Trib's only complaint with Janneke is her age. They acknowledge that she is qualified with her masters degree in urban planning. They acknowledge that she knows the issues and has plans to address them (monster houses, mass transit, etc.)

Eric's qualifications seem to be that he knows the issues that the city faces (good that is his job) and he has been involved in various group efforts in the community (again, his current job). Also, there is no mention of him leading or initiating anything.

So, basically Eric is a reactionary city councilman who has successfully reached the age of 46 and knows his job while Janneke is a "a very bright and capable woman,.." "with a master's degree in urban planning, has the knowledge and a sincere desire to work for an improved quality of life in her district."

This line also bothers me. "Jergensen's positive influence on the council and his experience as a business owner make him the better candidate in this race."

How does experience as a business owner make him better candidate for city council than someone with a Masters of Urban Planning?

I wonder if the Trib actually read this before publishing it. It seems to me to be an endorsement for both candidates. Except for the pesky age issue. Why don't they look at all that Janneke has accomplished by age 23 compared to many people twice her age and realize they could be getting someone with a great deal of potential at the beginning of her career?

Of course, successfully reaching the age of 46 is impressive too.

you forgot to mention that the Tribune tied her age to:

No actual experience doing anything other than being a student. Let's face it, the "vast experience" she's claiming is a fraud.

Age has nothing to do with it. IT'S EXPERIENCE!!.

Your insinutions about Jergensen betray your ignorance of the topic. You must be terribly new to District 3 politics. Go visit some of the neighborhood councils for some information on Jergensen's record.

Sorry buddy, but in June I'll have a masters degree too. And from a better University than Janneke House.

But guess what. An education is all I have. Everyone knows it's not enough. I'll spend the rest of my life justifying my education. That's life.

And are you seriously asking how years of operating a successfull business makes you more qualified than a masters degree that still smells like the xerox machine? Is that a serious question? I thought not.

Wow Ethan! Where is all that hostility coming from? I read that endorsement and it is lukewarm at best. Is your guy not doing as well as you had hoped?

The previous poster believes that years of operating a successful business automatically qualifies one for public office? Give me a break. I rarely see even a mediocre politician come out of the private business sector. Our President is a fine example of the job skills that come from the business sector.

Agreed, I've had enough of businessmen politicians. I'll be voting for the candidate with City Council-appropriate training, schooling, and enthusiasm.

Janneke has 5 as a professional planner for the city and county, By any measure a lot more than her opponent.

Counsel from elders seems to be a lost treasure. Lost are lessons learned that may contain pearls of wisdom that could have benefited the seeker. Having survived my share of hazardous crossings, I am pleased to be able to share a thought or two. The main lesson is to keep on learning. Read and seek out other points of view like visiting your blog. Finding what is ultimately important has lead me to appreciate actuality, efficiency and mindfulness. Helping others to see some of the forest through the trees is a rewarding benefit of age and maturity. Happy Thoughts
